In 1997, Wieland Scharf created the first “Thementag” (single-issue day) in the history of n-tv. Already before Hong Kong was handed over to China, the news channel has reported on cultural, economical, and political backgrounds of the then British Colony for a whole day. This quickly became a story of success.
Due to the enormous range of information about this impressive city, the five-part-series “Myth Hong Kong” was successfully started in the year 2000. Thanks to the positive feedback, follow-ups were produced in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012 - with the focus on politics, economy, tourism, as well as culture & tradition. Under the title "Boomtown Hong Kong" a new production aired during christmas time in 2015.
The TV-series had a sequel in the much-noticed documentary "Hongkong im Wandel" (Hongkong in a state of flux). For the 20th anniversary of Hongkong's transfer to the People's Republic of China, the blue planet team travelled to the Special Administrative Region at the Pearl River and produced an inventory of the poliotical, economical and social development. The series continued in 2019 with the most recent report. The next Hong Kong reportage is planned for 2024.
